We couldn't be more excited to be one day away from our first practice. We have a team of 13 amazing girls signed up, and the coaches met last night to go over the game plan for tomorrow's inaugural practice.

Community support has been beyond what we could have hoped for - we have raised enough money to purchase skates, pads, helmets and mouthguards for everyone, and team shirts are also in the budget - a great memento from this first camp!

Tomorrow night, we will try everyone's gear on and make sure it fits, do some off-skate drills to get the kids comfortable in their pads and helmets, and spend lots of time learning how to fall - the ability to fall in a way that is safe for yourself and the skaters around you is key, and we want to start creating that muscle memory right from the get-go. In derby, it's not a matter of IF you'll fall, it's WHEN you'll fall, so knowing how to do so safely is essential.

Keep your eyes on our blog (here) and our social media sites (@HeightsDerby on twitter, and Rideau Heights Junior Roller Derby on facebook) for photos from practices and updates on the team.
